Every classroom needs a collection of books. You never know what will capture a child’s imagination. What was the first book that influenced your life?
Low-income homes on average have one book for every 300 children compared to middle & high-income homes with 50 books per child. A child who does not read may face dire consequences. 85% of children in juvenile justice systems are functionally illiterate.
A 2016 U.S. Department of Education study found that 32 million of American adults are illiterate, 21 percent read below a 5th grade level, and 19 percent of high school graduates are functionally illiterate, which means they can’t read well enough to manage daily living and perform tasks required by many jobs.

Teachers report that readers are more likely to complete a hard copy book instead of a tablet book.

Studies have found that children are better readers if they are in surroundings filled with books. A classroom full of books is an important component of education. We, as a community, can make that happen in our schools.

Many new books are being published that encourage an understanding of others. Our children deserve to be surrounded by these books.

Our focus was on recent small and large press offerings that encourage an understanding of diversity, peace, social justice, and conflict resolution. Teachers asked that we include a category for the environment. After reading many lists, blogs, searching websites, and using our public library we have created a dynamic list of over 450 books in thirteen categories of diversity for grades K through 12, plus recommended books for teachers.
