Safety and security are paramount at SMART, reflecting our unwavering commitment to providing a secure environment for our passengers and communities. If you observe any suspicious packages or activities on our platforms, we encourage you to promptly inform a conductor or a SMART employee. Alternatively, you can call our toll-free number at (888) 412-3330 to report it to our Operational Control Center. In emergencies, dial 911 for immediate assistance.

For incidents specific to the SMART railway or rail grade crossings, such as a stalled vehicle on the tracks or a crossing gate malfunction, contact (888) 412-3330. Before making the call, please locate the crossing ID number, conveniently displayed on the blue and white Emergency Notification System (ENS) sign found on gate masts at each crossing. This unique number, assigned by the U.S. Department of Transportation, streamlines the identification process for a quicker response.

Understanding the diverse needs of our communities, SMART has collaborated with local jurisdictions to establish Quiet Zones in most areas of Marin and Sonoma counties. In these zones, train horns do not routinely sound as they pass through crossings. To support this initiative, SMART has implemented additional safety features at each crossing, such as extra gates or medians, enhancing overall safety. For details on Quiet Zone establishment, consult the fact sheet provided by the Federal Railroad Administration.

To ensure the safety of all passengers and community members, we urge everyone to remain vigilant and follow essential safety guidelines. Stay alert around railroad tracks and crossings, never stop on the tracks, and avoid attempting to cross until you are certain it can be done safely. Adhering to signals, refraining from walking on the tracks, and never driving around lowered crossing gates are crucial steps in promoting a secure rail environment.
