Introducing the SMART Pathway – an extensive network of thoughtfully designed pathways created by the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) District in collaboration with partner agencies. Spanning over 28 miles, with approximately 21 miles classified as Class I SMART Pathway seamlessly integrated within and alongside the railroad right-of-way, this innovative infrastructure enhances connectivity and accessibility for communities in Marin and Sonoma counties.

Excitingly, an additional 9.5 miles of pathway are set for construction in 2023/2024, marking a significant stride towards bolstering the SMART Pathway network. The commitment to further expansion is evident, with an impressive 31 miles in the planning phase, of which 3.5 miles are already fully funded for construction. Stay informed about the pathway's progress by referring to the June 2023 Pathway Update presented to the SMART Board of Directors.

The SMART Pathway serves as an integral component in providing convenient first and last-mile connections to train stations, offering a secure means of travel along the rail corridor. Particularly in areas where the SMART Pathway becomes the most efficient route between communities, it serves as a crucial link. For cyclists, the SMART train and pathway system opens up new possibilities for longer journeys, extending the utility of bicycles as a preferred mode of travel.

To enhance user experience, SMART has developed new maps with improved legibility, available in two formats: printable PDF maps and an online interactive map. These resources offer up-to-date information on the status of the SMART Pathway, ensuring users have the latest details for their journey.

As part of our commitment to user-friendly navigation, SMART is actively developing a Pathway Wayfinding Plan. This plan includes the implementation of signage along the multi-use bicycle and pedestrian pathway, facilitating easy navigation for users connecting to SMART rail stations and various destinations. The SMART Pathway embodies our dedication to creating a sustainable, accessible, and interconnected transportation solution for the communities we serve.
