Wave Ryder Sweet Shoppe
Gilbert Woodley and his family officially opened Wave Ryder Sweet Shoppe along South Main Street, a couple of buildings away from Fox’s Pizza Den. Wave Ryder closed on its building on September 9th and renovations began soon after, allowing for a grand opening on Halloween.
Woodley said the inspiration for opening Wave Ryder Sweet Shoppe was to add variety to Homer City.

Western Pennsylvania Conservancy
Three years into the Great Depression on February 16, 1932, 10 citizens came together to start a nonprofit conservation organization to alleviate widespread unemployment through public works programs. They also wanted these programs to create a positive impact on the regions natural resources. Their actions founded the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, known then under its former name as the Greater Pittsburgh Parks Association.
Today, the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy is still going strong and has protected more than 255,000 acres of natural lands in Pennsylvania, helped to establish 10 state parks, and protected or restored more than 3,000 miles of rivers and streams. In 1963, Edgar Kaufmann jr. entrusted the Conservancy with Fallingwater, his familys weekend home, and Frank Lloyd Wrights masterwork in Mill Run, Pennsylvania. We also enrich our regions cities and towns through 132 community gardens and green spaces that are planted with the help of more than 10,300 members and nearly 12,000 volunteers. We invite you to explore the challenges and successes that comprise our history of caring for water, land, and wildlife in Western Pennsylvania.

Westmoreland County Community College, Indiana Center
In 1967, the school directors of Westmoreland County studied the possibility of starting a community college in the county. After local surveys proved favorable, the Westmoreland County Board of Commissioners agreed to sponsor the college and named a board of trustees. Following approval from the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Westmoreland County Community College was founded in March 1970.
On February 1, 1971, the college conducted its first nine evening classes for 259 students in rented classrooms at Jeannette High School. Without a permanent home, the college was limited to offering only evening classes. Following a search for a suitable building, the Westinghouse Corporation offered to sell its semiconductor plant in Youngwood to serve as a permanent campus for the college. In the fall of 1972, the college moved to its present site, in the building now known as Founders Hall. Day classes were offered for the first time and close to 1,500 students enrolled. A major renovation of Founders Hall, known as the Student Achievement Center, will be completed in 2020. The first permanent facility constructed for Westmoreland, Commissioners Hall, was completed in June 1990. Science Hall opened to students in June 1994. A state-of-the-art addition, the Science Innovation Center, was added in August 2018.
Today, as Westmoreland plans to celebrate its 50th anniversary, the college enrolls more than 5,000 students and offers more than 100 programs of study at eight locations.
