Kootznoowoo

Kootznoowoo, Inc. stands as a beacon of tradition and stewardship within the realm of for-profit enterprises. As an Alaska Native Village Corporation, we are deeply rooted in the ethos of our Tlingit ancestors, weaving their timeless values into the fabric of our corporate identity. Our commitment to preserving the land entrusted to us is unwavering, echoing the reverence our forebears held for the natural world. Born from the landmark Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971, Kootznoowoo represents the village of Angoon nestled in Southeast Alaska, a community of approximately 450 individuals, predominantly of Tlingit descent.

Established on November 9, 1973, Kootznoowoo draws its name from the majestic Admiralty Island, home to Angoon, with "Kootznoowoo" translating to "Fortress of the Bears" in homage to the island's abundant bear population. Unlike conventional for-profit entities, ownership within Kootznoowoo transcends mere commerce; shares are sacred bonds, passed down through generations, fostering a network of familial and cultural ties. Originally comprising 629 shareholders, each receiving 100 shares in recognition of their Alaska Native lineage to Angoon, our shareholder base has since expanded to 1,100 individuals. While our shareholders span the vast expanse of Alaska and the contiguous United States, the heart of our community remains firmly rooted in our Alaskan homeland, with our corporate headquarters situated in the vibrant city of Juneau.
