Tom Wallick Pottery and Rock Shop
Tom Wallick knew he was a ceramic artist the first time he worked with clay. In an introductory high school ceramics class, Tom created a reverse two-handled water pitcher for his first project, quite reminiscent of the 600 BC Greek amphoras. For the next three decades, Tom produced a wide range of pottery styles, selling on both individual and mass-market scales. During this time, he started an interior design firm in Newport Beach, California, furthering his acumen in the Interior Design and Kitchen and Bath trades.
Tom's signature style is a piece with graceful lines adorned with "Prehistoric" texturing and crystalline glazing. Classic graceful lines are innate; the "Prehistoric" technique was his own invention; the crystalline glazing came as a result of a fortuitous meeting with crystalline ceramic artist Kris Friedrich a few years ago. Kris taught Tom the technique of crystalline glazing, imparting both his knowledge and love of the craft to Tom, in keeping with his magnanimous notion of passing along one's "gifts."
Tom is proud to be an "Honorary Resident Artist" at the American Museum of Ceramic Art (AMOCA) and when asked what facet of his work provides his greatest joy, Tom responds that it's "the pleasure I get from seeing someone's awe" upon introduction to a crystalline piece. Every kiln opening is "Christmas" for Tom; it's always a wonderful surprise to see what unique transformation the crystalline glazes have undergone in the firing, making each piece truly a one-of-a-kind work of art.
Tom's studio and showroom are located at 125 Myrtle Street off Main Street in Chester. When you visit, you can often see him at the wheel, working his creations. Tom's designs are also showcased at B & B Booksellers Gallery, 278 Main Street and the Blue Goose Gallery, 607 Main Street, Chester.
