Company founder Dick Fleming owned a Howard Johnson's hotel franchise off of I-95 in Smithfield, NC. During some of their travels he and his wife Jean came across several "pottery concept" stores and liked the idea. He decided to open a similar store in Smithfield to help be an attraction and draw in more customers for his hotel business.
