United Readers, an initiative led by United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra, is a dedicated program crafted to enhance foundational literacy skills through the guidance of specially trained AmeriCorps members. These mentors engage in one-on-one and small group mentoring sessions with students from kindergarten through third grade, placing a primary emphasis on phonemic awareness, the crucial ability to perceive and manipulate sounds. Developed in close partnership with the Washoe County School District, United Readers was officially inaugurated in November 2020.
