Children's Literacy Center
MISSION STATEMENT: Building a life of success through a foundation of literacy…ONE child at a time.
Children’s Literacy Center (CLC) provides free one-to-one tutoring to elementary school children who are reading below grade level.
Since 1991, the CLC has been providing free one-to-one tutoring to underperforming students in Colorado. CLC Peak Reader Curriculum, a proven tool designed by CLC in collaboration with local and national education experts, incorporates a mountain theme as children climb to the peak of their reading abilities. Each lesson in Peak Reader is based on a specific aspect of the English Language and is aligned with Colorado State Education Standards and National Literacy Strategies. Lessons are progressive in nature and uniform in format, providing the child with a sense of consistency from lesson to lesson.
CLC is the perfect place for young students who are struggling to meet school reading standards. AND this service is FREE of charge!
Criteria for student enrollment
To be eligible for the Peak Reader Program®, a child must be reading below their grade level, must have completed the first semester of first grade, and must have a reading level between first and sixth grade. CLC volunteers cannot tutor children diagnosed with Dyslexia or those on an Individual Education Plan. For eligible children, tutors work with children one-to-one using CLC’s phonics-based program at no cost at all! Teachers, if you have students who fit these criteria and you would like to refer them to CLC’s program, please complete and submit the online Student Referral Form, and parents must complete and submit the Parent Commitment Form.
Once the Parent Commitment Form and the Student Referral Form have both been received, the student’s name is placed on a waitlist until we have an available tutor. We can only serve the number of students for which we have tutors, so we are always looking for tutors.
Who are the tutors
Children’s Literacy Center tutors are volunteers (age 14 and older) from the community who have completed a background screening and three hours of CLC training. Many of our tutors are retired professionals wanting to give back, some are high school students required to complete volunteer hours for school, and a few are college students pursuing careers in education. Regardless of their background, all of them possess a desire to help the children in their community. The one-on-one attention, along with the easy-to-follow curriculum, is what makes the program so successful.
